User Reviews for Duke University Chapel

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Who said that you can't find religion at the end of Science Drive? Attended my first service there today and took the tour afterwards. It really is an architectural marvel. It ranks only behind the Biltmore in terms of places visited in the state of North Carolina. Really recommend the tour as it really fleshes out a lot of the details in the chapel that you wouldn't otherwise think about.

Pros: Stain glass windows, intricate attention to detail, architecture, parking

Cons: Organ can drown out the choir

Spending time in Duke Chapel, whether or not a service or performance is going on, is a feast for the eyes and the soul. It's awe-inspiring, no matter what your religion, I think. The architecture, organ, and stained glass windows are breath-taking! Spend some time there, it'll be a highlight of your visit to Durham!

With the new parking garage behind Duke's Bryan Center (at the end of Science Dr.), it's never been easier to enjoy the wonders of Duke Chapel. Check the Chapel website for other services like Taize on Tues evenings and Vespers on Thursday evenings. But a word to the wise - if you're coming for a long concert (esp. the Messiah!), bring a pillow or cushion to sit on. Somehow they combined the most beautiful architecture with the most uncomfortable pews! And legend has it, there is a Blue Devil on one of the stained glass windows. Can you find it?

Absolutely nothing else like it anywhere in the state. Be sure to go at 5:00 to hear the carrilloneur play the bells.

Pros: amazing architecture

Even the non religious will enjoy this site. See the pipe organ and beautiful wood carving of the lecturn and pulpit.

Pros: woodwork, pipe organ, sculptures

Stained glass and ornate organs lure half a million visitors here each year.  See the full editorial review.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

Of the 1,470 spots, the best bet is a middle pew, so the Flentrop doesn't sound to loud.
