Decided to try this out since I was looking for a park with walking trails and it is not far from my home. The lake is pretty and this is a definite fishing spot, but if you aren't coming to fish or boat there isn't much else to do. First thing we noticed after finding the main parking lot with the information booth, is that there are no maps of the park to be found. With no trail map and no signs pointing out any trails, we just drove from one parking area to the next. There were only very small trails leading off to the lake, apparently just for people to get to the fishing spots. If there is some sort of hiking trail here we never found it.

A great resource for boating fun in Raleigh. You can bring your own boat and launch it for just a couple of dollars. They also rent small non-motorized vessels. There is even a high school rowing team that is open to kids 12 years and older. See newWakeRowing dot com With the no-wake hours it's a great place to bring your own shell to row.

Pros: Easy power boat launching, easy rowing shell launching, no wake hours, bathrooms, conference room

Lake Wheeler is the ideal body of water in the NC Triangle for recreational and competitive rowing. The sport is organized by the Raleigh Rowing Center (www.raleighrowing) and by NC State University and several area middle/high schools. The city has arranged "wake-free" times on Tue-Thu-Sat from sunrise till 1100. The lake is about 2500m long and about 500m wide, without current and little wind impact Very easily accessible from I-40, exit 297, 3 miles south.

Pros: accessibility, facilities, scenery

Cons: none

Went out sailing at Lake Wheeler!! Wow what a great place to go on the weekend. I also stayed for the concert and met the new lake manager.

Lake Wheeler Park is a beautiful place but I don't recommend going to this park during the week. The Park Manager contaminates the pleasant atmosphere that people go to parks to find (he only works during the week). I have personally witnessed him harrassing people who are minding their own business and aren't breaking any of his "rules." Major power trip going on there. There are so many rules and policies in place at this park (not to mention all the bright red signs that distract from the views), that you feel you have to walk on eggshells just to take a stroll on the walking trails. In addition, this park is not handicap accessible. Don't try to enjoy it in a wheelchair - you won't be able to get out of your car.

Cons: , Not handicap accessib, rules/policies

Great porch area overlooking the lake, complete with old fashioned rocking chairs. Great for dozing off. The geese walking their little ones was such a cute site, but careful not to get too close, especially if you have a pet or a small child. The geese were quick to attack if you got too close to the little ones. The hiking trail was somewhat challenging, it was outlined with stones by a group of volunteers. Overall great place to spend a day!
