The Carolina is the only place in durham to catch anything outside the top blockbusters. The film prints are always well cared for, the theatres are clean and comfortable, and as an added bonus buy a beer or a glass of wine. If only the cinema had more screens! They don't get enough of the art house, documentaries, or indy films in that a true film lover craves.
Pros: only place to go!

As a theater, Carolina Theater fails miserably. The whole point of a theater is to view entertainment. If you can't see the entertainment, the whole experience is ruined. The entire time I was there, I could not see between 1/4 and 1/3 of the screen due to the person in front of me blocking my view. My friend could not see between 40-50% of the screen due to the person in front of him blocking his view. The seats were extremely uncomfortable. However, the sound was great, and the theater staff were very friendly. The problem rests solely on the seating and, due to that, I will never go to another event at this theater again. It was very disappointing.
Pros: Nice staff, good sound
Cons: Seating, Seating, Seating

Break free from the worthless crap being fed to you by the suits in the movie industry. Great selection of films. Reasonably priced concessions. Beer and Wine available. Finish a romantic evening near the water fountain in the courtyard.
Pros: Beer and Wine, Butter yr own popcorn, Great atmosphere

Can one theatre dominate an entire state in terms of film festivals? Looks like the Carolina Theatre stands on the shoulders of even the best of 'em, bar none. Gay and Lesbian, Jewish, Horror, Fantasy, retrospectives. And tons of EXCLUSIVE and PREMIERE films. Yes, this is as close as it gets in NC to feel like you're in New York City or Los Angeles! The absolute BEST place to see films you won't catch anywhere else...particularly those other so-called arthouses in the Triangle.
Pros: Film selection, attitude, atmosphere
